Disney’s head honcho, Bob Iger, said that there are no plans to make any R-rated Marvel movies. This bit of news comes hot on the heels of Deadpool‘s bloody, gory box office success, as well as other announcements of other superhero flicks aiming for R ratings. It’s likely that all these announcements came because of Deadpool‘s success, and other studios are looking to cash in on “the new thing” of pushing those boundaries.

Because of that, Iger’s comment stands out. Aside from the fact that Disney is, well, Disney, Iger’s comments speak to a greater confidence and trust in Marvel’s creative direction. I realize that’s not the hottest take on this comment–it is, after all, really easy to trust in the juggernaut that is Marvel Studios. But still, such a blanket statement definitely stands out in a world that’s increasingly trending towards the gritty and bloody.
