Say what you want about EA Games; we’re just going to go ahead and mark this one down in the win column. A Donald Trump campaign ad made by a fan (yes, he has those) featured some assets from Mass Effect, and publisher EA is shutting that nonsense down.
The video has already been removed from YouTube due to the company’s copyright claim, but so far, you can still observe all the bizarre nonsense in the tweet above (we’ll have to wait and see if Twitter mobilizes a takedown, as they’re generally less on top of that than YouTube). Sure, the ad seemingly wasn’t produced by the Trump campaign, but with his notorious Twitter account promoting it, it’s easy to see why EA would want to push that nonsense as far away from themselves as possible.
In an email statement to Game Informer, the game company said simply, “The video was an unauthorized use of our IP. We do not support our assets being used in political campaigns.” Still, I have to believe that they wouldn’t be so quick to jump on a goofy fan campaign ad using their music and voiceover if it had been for a less controversial candidate—or even just someone with a basic understanding of human rights and dignity. (And maybe someone who isn’t easily fashioned as a game’s villain.)
