Last week, Marvel released its first video in a series on the new Black Panther title, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with art by Brian Stelfreeze. In that video, Coates gave us a preliminary look at T’Challa and Wakanda. This week, since Issue #2 is out today, Marvel has released a new video that goes more in-depth into the first story arc of the new series, A Nation Under Our Feet.
Something that has me really excited about this title is the feminine energy that’s being brought to it, despite it having a male protagonist. Wakanda has always been a place where women have been respected and valued, and it seems like that way of thinking is coming through in the writing of this as well. I’m excited for the new antagonist, Zenzi, who is leading a rebellion against T’Challa. I’m excited for the story of Ayo and Aneka, two members of the Dora Milaje, the all-female royal guard that has protected Wakanda for generations. Despite turning over their life to service of their country, they have fallen in love, and have to deal with that conflict.
I’ve only ever dabbled in Black Panther before, and was most interested in the title back when T’Challa’s sister Shuri was at the forefront of the story, but these new developments are hella intriguing. I might be adding another title to my pull list today.
