The last time we saw Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World, she was reunited with the god of thunder. Their reunion, however, wasn’t meant to last that long, as we’ve seen Thor gallavant across the cosmos, helping the Avengers deal with things here and there. Now, with the coming of Thor: Ragnarok, Foster will continue to be MIA, as Kevin Feige confirmed that Natalie Portman would not be returning to the franchise’s next installment. This is news we’ve known for a while now, but the in-universe reason for Foster’s absence wasn’t quite yet established until recently, when Feige chatted with Empire.
According to Feige, Foster isn’t around simply because Ragnarok will be taking place almost entirely in the cosmos. “There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie,” said Feige. “80 to 90 percent takes place in the cosmos.” Seems legit, right? As well, it would make sense that Portman might be interested in non-genre flicks, so this could very well be a pretty convenient excuse to not have to worry about bringing her into the movie.
We’ve also known for a while that Tessa Thompson would be joining the cast of Ragnarok, and frankly, we’re pretty darn excited about that. Now that we know that the film is supposed to take place mostly in the cosmos, what does that mean for Thompson’s role? As we mentioned, Thompson signed a multi-picture deal, and sources have said that she will play “a key role” as “a kind of superhero and will appear in other Marvel films as well.”
What do you think we can expect from the Thor-niverse now?
