As we reported a couple of days ago, Jessica Williams is leaving her role as correspondent at The Daily Show to pursue her own narrative series about a young “woke” feminist. (And yes, she asked people to always use quotes around “woke.”) Last night was her last episode, and Trevor Noah, along with all the other Daily Show correspondents, said goodbye, which you can watch in the above video.
It’s sweet to see how much Noah clearly appreciates Williams and her contributions to the show, and it’s true that the montage that they assembled of Williams’ “Greatest Hits,” while totally reminding me of some forgotten treasures in her repertoire, does not come close to doing her or her work justice. In fact, one of my favorite segments of hers was this one on “The Trans Panic Epidemic.” My favorite line? “Ugh. I thought it was tough being a black woman. But compared to a black, transgender woman, I might as well be a white frat dude at a Dave Matthews concert.”
Thankfully, Williams left us with one more brilliant segment before she left last night, and I’ve got to say that while it was funny, it was also absolutely horrifying. Here’s Williams talking to some real-life Bernie Sanders supporters who are so anti-Hillary Clinton that they say they’re voting for Trump, doing USA Gymnastics team-level doublethink acrobatics to somehow make Trump sound like an appropriate choice following their hardcore support of one of the most progressive Presidential candidates this country has seen in pretty much ever:
Well, we are definitely going to miss Williams’ insight, intelligence, humor, and her complete DGAF-ness when talking to hypocritical dumbasses.
We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on her as she moves forward with her own show. Before Trevor Noah came on the scene, Williams was always one of the names that came up to replace Jon Stewart when he left as host of The Daily Show. But Jessica Williams ain’t got time for that. She has her own shit to do.
