Hey, friend. If you haven’t picked up a PlayStation 4 quite yet, you may want to hold off just a tiny bit longer. According to reports from Vice Gaming and Gameblog, the new iteration of the PS4 (codename: “Neo”) will be unveiled on September 7th. Why should you hold off? Well, for starters, it’s not just a “thin” version of the current PS4 model. It’s actually a jump up in terms of processing power, which means it’ll be VR-ready when PlayStation VR launches later this Fall. As well, it’ll support 4K resolution, meaning your games will look a hecking lot prettier.

For those of you currently with a PS4, it’s entirely up to you to decide if you want to upgrade to this new version or not. Your PS4 should handle PlayStation VR just fine, it’s just that the “Neo” will handle load times better.

In the never-ending arms race between consoles, the PS4’s “Neo” could possibly be seen as the counterpart or rival to Microsoft Xbox’s “Project: Scorpio.” The buzz around this year’s E3 revolved around how each of the major three consoles would focus mostly on improving the consoles currently out on the market, which would signify a shift in hardware development from the “new major console release every few years” model to which we’ve all grown accustomed. Since the past few years have been about ushering in the advent of end-user virtual reality hardware, it’s perhaps no surprise that all the improvements keep that in mind.

So, pal. Will you be picking up a “Neo” PS4 if and when it comes out? And, if you do, can I totally come over and play? I’ll bring snacks, I promise.
