Target continues to incorporate LGBTQIA-friendly initiatives into their policy, as they’ve just announced a plan to install gender-neutral bathrooms in all their stores.

Spokeswoman Katie Boylan said that Target already has gender-neutral bathrooms in the majority of their 1,800 locations, but plans to spend approximately $20 million to ensure that only an estimated 25 will be without an inclusive bathroom by the end of the year. Boylan says, “At the end of the day, Target is all about inclusion. We want everyone to feel comfortable in our stores.”

After installing gender-neutral toy aisles and children’s sections (how confusing!), an inclusive bathroom policy that allows trans patrons and staff to use the bathroom of their choice, and other initiatives around treating people like human beings, Target has faced a lot of backlashwith several people promising to boycott the store. These negative reactions include large petitions and trolling, but CFO Cathy Smith denies these are responsible for the fall in Target earnings. While upsetting, they’ve also been a source of humor, and Target’s been handling it pretty well.

It’s great to see Target continue their commitment to LGBTQIA customers and staff, and hopefully other business will follow.
