I’d like to start off by thanking CBS for canceling Supergirl so that the show could live on in a more suitable home on the CW Network. Sure, the first season had its cringe-worthy moments but things are really looking up for season two. We already know that there will be more crossovers to come, including a musical one with The Flash, and that Superman will no longer be just a pair of red boots as Tyler Hoechlin has been cast to play the Man of Steel.
In a conversation with Collider, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg elaborated on the show’s upcoming crossovers and how doing a musical actually makes sense. “Even when DC did ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ or Marvel did ‘Secret Wars,’ they made them seem like these big, giant events, and that’s what we try to emulate in the crossovers,” he said.
Hence why they’re planning a four-way extravaganza between Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. But honestly, if you’re going to gather a group of superheroes in one place, it makes sense to up the ante. However, some say doing a musical might be going a bit far. Don’t tell that to Kreisberg, who says the musical crossover isn’t so farfetched. “We’ve already had crossovers, which in and of themselves were these crazy things that we can’t believe that we did [like The Flash and its alternate dimension]…So, it doesn’t actually seem that much more crazy to us because we’ve already done these crazy things.”
Let’s not forget that this is a comic book series, where the suspension of belief is a lot more flexible than a PBS period drama. So if we can accept alternate timelines and people who can fly, then surely singing and dancing to elaborately choreographed numbers aren’t completely out of the realm of believability on the show. As Kreisberg puts it, “What’s so crazy about a villain that can make you think your friends are singing and dancing in front of you?”
And there you have it. It looks like they won’t be just randomly singing and dancing as was previously assumed. It will be more of a Joss Whedon affair except what we see the characters doing won’t actually be what’s happening in the show’s reality. They’ll just appear to be doing such. Still, this gets me just as excited as Kara is about ice cream. Speaking of frozen delights, what’s the likelihood that we’ll get a number in which Kara sings an ode to Ben and Jerry’s?
Supergirl heads to her new home at the CW on Oct. 10.
