We’ve been looking forward to the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off Class for a while now. Well, the BBC has finally released some behind-the-scenes featurettes to give us a better idea of what we can expect from this new addition to the Whoniverse. Check them out below!

The series is written by Patrick Ness, a name familiar to fans of YA best known for his Chaos Walking trilogy. In the above clip, Ness gives us a feel for the type of show Class will be, as it looks at the Doctor Who universe from the perspective of the young people attending Coal Hill School, a hub of space-time-Doctor activity since the days of William Hartnell as the Doctor. Ness explains, “Class is funny, and moving, and exciting, and scary, and sexy, and it’s true, I hope, to what teenagers feel like their lives are.”

Meanwhile, the second clip goes a little more in-depth into one of the lead characters, a teacher at Coal Hill named Miss Quill. In this interview with the actor who plays her, Katherine Kelly, we learn that Miss Quill is a seemingly normal, albeit sarcastic, schoolteacher on the outside, but that her appearance belies a lot more mystery and badassery. Judging by how we see her dressed in the video, complete with a glowing gun, I have a feeling that she, like Clara Oswald, is not your usual schoolteacher.

Speaking of Clara, while she obviously won’t be appearing on Class, Peter Capaldi’s Doctor will appear in the first episode. While it’s unclear how often he’ll participate after that, there was some footage of him in the above featurette. Perhaps he’ll stop by from time to time.

Ideally, though, the show will be engaging enough that it won’t need the Doctor to be entertaining in its own right. I’m looking forward to it!
