This Fences Trailer Has Turned Me Into a Crying Mess. So Sorry, I’m Useless for the Rest of the Day

When I first read Fences for a school assignment a long time ago, it didn’t quite have the emotional impact on me that I think my teacher was hoping for. After going back over a quick summary to jog my memory, and after watching this stellar trailer for the movie adaptation, I want to say: I’m really sorry for not giving this story the attention it deserved.

If you haven’t read the play, seen it performed, or even if you know nothing about it at all, I’d still highly recommend that you watch this trailer anyway. The immense intensity that Denzel Washington brings to each and every one of his roles is strongly present here as well, and it goes well with his role as Troy, a father in the 1950s who struggles with both race relations and what it has to do with the dynamics of his household.

Matching and perhaps even exceeding Washington’s performance in this trailer is Viola Davis, who plays Rose, Troy’s wife, who deals with many of the same things, but whose struggles often go unseen and unheard (well, until the moment you see in the trailer, that is).

Tell me: are you going to be checking the movie out when it releases this Christmas?
