Great news, Disney fans! It’s just been announced that Meg LeFauve, the screenwriter for Captain Marvel and Inside Out will be co-directing Disney’s upcoming retelling of the classic story Jack and the Beanstalk. The film, titled Gigantic, will be LeFauve’s first directing credit alongside Tangled director Nathan Greno.
According to Slash Film, Gigantic takes place in Age of Exploration Spain, when adventurer Jack discovers beans that bring him to a world of giants. One giant, a 11-year-old 60-foot-tall girl named Inma, forms a bond with Jack and he agrees to “help her find her way home, and they join forces to stop the Storm Giants, a group of enormous bad guys.”
LeFauve’s previous work on Pixar movies like Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, as well as her current work on Captain Marvel with Nicole Perlman, makes her directing debut very promising and I’m sure Gigantic will bring copious amounts of laughter and tears. The movie will also include songs by Frozen duo Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez, so expect a lot of great tunes as well!
This is also a big deal because, as HitFix points out, this is the second time a Disney feature has been directed by a woman. The other time was Jennifer Lee co-directing Frozen, a screenwriter-to-director trajectory that many have noted is similar to LeFauve’s. If that doesn’t hit you as huge, remember that only 2 female solo directors helmed US animated features in the last 15 years. Gigantic comes to the big screen November 21, 2018.
