You might be surprised to learn that actor Tom Hanks has hosted Saturday Night Live nine times (“nine times, Mrs. Bueller!”). I certainly was, but given that Hanks is one step closer to securing his membership in the Ten-Timers Club, he certainly wasn’t experiencing any nerves whatsoever when he took the stage last night.
In fact, he was there from the first beat of the cold open, playing moderator Chris Wallace in SNL‘s parody of the third and final U.S. presidential debate (which, again, didn’t have to do much in the way of jokes given how these debates tend to sort of spoof themselves).
Hanks had a couple other memorable bits that resonated with the SNL audience, including Trump-supporter Doug in the show’s running “Black Jeopardy” skit and someone called David Pumpkins who isn’t all that scary in the “Haunted Elevator”, but somehow gets elevated to hilarity with the help of a couple of dancing skeletons played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan:
However, it was Hanks’ monologue at the top of the show that served to remind everyone of why he’s earned the moniker of “America’s Dad”. Switching out his suit jacket for a cozy sweater, Hanks proceeded to sit down with America for a much-needed pep talk–and after Emily Blunt’s puppy handout last week, I think it’s safe to say that SNL is single-handedly trying to cheer up the country in the middle of this stressful election season:
There. Don’t you feel a little better now, America?
