In an interview with Fandango, Andrew Garfield, whose superhero status ended with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, talks about how he felt being recast as the teenage web-slinger joined the Marvel movies.
Garfield, in response, was gracious and supportive of Tom Holland taking on the role.
You know what, it’s sliding doors, right? There are so many possible outcomes; so many positives and potential downsides to that situation. If I am being totally honest, I am so excited Spider-Man is back in the hands of Marvel. I think that’s a really awesome move. It was a move that I’ve been advocating since I was offered the Spider-Man gig five or six years ago. I’m also excited for Tom Holland. I think he’s a very emotional, truthful, funny, physical actor, and I love the filmmaker — it all really couldn’t be in any better hands. I’m really stoked for it.
It’s not surprising considering he’s said before that he’s been petitioning “to hook up with Marvel since the beginning.” The actor has spoken before about how much he loves the character, and like any other fan it’s clear that he just wants to see a great Spider-Man.
It’s not like Garfield’s been idle, anyway. The actor also shared that retrospectively, he’s thankful he didn’t have to do Amazing Spider-Man 3, as that time allowed him to work with Mel Gibson in Hacksaw Ridge and Martin Scorsese in Silence –which come out in November and December, respectively. His starring role in Silence is already generating Oscar talk.
Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t come out until July of next year, but filming has wrapped up and a sequel is apparently on the way, so anticipate plenty of Holland’s Spider-Man in the future.
