If I can borrow a few of Big Freedia’s beautiful words at the beginning of Beyonce’s “Formation,” Ava DuVernay came to slay. Her team just released A Wrinkle in Time’s entry in the Mannequin Challenge and if that short video is any indication, this film will be excellent. What I love about it is that in addition to the flawless execution, it also shows just how inclusive the project is both on screen and behind the camera.
As it pans out through the various members of the cast and crew, you see people of different backgrounds—representative of the diverse world that we live in. While others are merely talking about increasing diversity in film, DuVernay has already put her money where her mouth is.
The video also revealed that the sci-fi film is coming out on April 6, 2018, which is the same release year as Marvel’s Black Panther solo film. In other words, 2018 is about to be so lit. An adaption of the children’s novel by Madeleine L’Engle, the story follows a teen girl in search of her father who goes missing after working on a top secret government project.
Storm Reid stars as the young protagonist, with Chris Pine and Gugu Mbatha-Raw playing her scientist parents. The cast also includes Reese Witherspoon, Michael Peña, Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey and Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium. More recently, it was revealed that Girl Meets World star and outspoken feminist Rowan Blanchard would be joining, along with Scandal favorite Bellamy Young.
I don’t know about you, but hearing this lineup makes me shiver with antici…pation.
