It’s no secret that Eddie Redmayne is a talented singer–Les Misérables demonstrated that clearly to the world. But before Redmayne was lovestruck revolutionary Marius Pontmercy, he was a self-proclaimed “friend-less” boy at the Jackie Palmer Stage School who really loved singing “Memory” from Cats.

In a segment from The Late Late Show, James Corden, who also attended the school, talks about their experiences and shares a clip of a prepubescent Redmayne singing his favorite tune. The Oscar-winning actor, like any of us would, reacts with absolute horror by turning bright red, groaning loudly, and aggressively shushing himself while also sinking into the Late Late Show couch. His voice, however, is lovely and reveals how talented Redmayne was even at a young age.

To make it fair, Corden, Redmayne, and Jessica Chastain all take a look at their old headshots and styles afterwards for some good-natured teasing. The clip is the equivalent of your mother showing your friends and loved one embarrassing videos of you as a child—except your mom is James Corden and instead of showing your friends he’s showing the entire world.
