A movie about a female screenwriter in wartime London that examines institutionalized sexism and the power of storytelling in film? Sign us up! Check out the trailer for Their Finest above.

Their Finest is directed by Lone Scherfig (2009’s An Education), and finds Gemma Arterton playing a female screenwriter (all the dudes are off to war, after all) tasked with the job of writing a film that will encourage Americans to get into the war effort during the London Blitz. Here’s the official synopsis:

1940, London, the Blitz; with the country’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), the trio set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population.

It co-stars the ever-awesome Bill Nighy, as well as Sam Claflin, Jack Huston, Jake Lacy, Richard E. Grant, Henry Goodman, Helen McCrory, and Claudia Jessie, and it seems to be a comedic film that checks off a lot of my boxes: period drama, female protagonist, a love story, an examination of sexism, and the importance of art in changing hearts and minds.

Most of us here in the U.S. will have to wait until March 24, 2017 to see it (it opens in the UK on April 21st in the UK…sorry UK!), though it will be screening at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. So, if you happen to be going to that, do let us know what you think of this one, won’t you?

Will you be checking out Their Finest this spring?
