Vice President Mike Pence just delivered a speech to the March for Life anti-choice rally, becoming the first Vice President in history to do so. His attendance and support were noted by the rally organizers, who said that he’d bring about “a surge of energy.” That surge is due in part to “the ascension of a president who is expected to move forward on anti-abortion policies, including defunding Planned Parenthood and appointing an anti-abortion Supreme Court justice.” Presidential adviser Kellyanne “Alternative Facts” Conway also spoke at the rally.
Normally held around the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (which was this past Sunday), the march is intended to be a major demonstration on behalf of religious groups and other advocates for the abolishment of abortion. While many advocates present at the demonstration urge that contraceptives and sex education be focused on as an alternative, many more support the abolishment of the practice.
Pence has been a longtime anti-abortion advocate. He began introducing bills to the House of Representatives to defund Planned Parenthood way back in 2007. As governor of Indiana, he signed eight anti-abortion bills, including the highly controversial bill calling for burials or cremation fetal tissue, regardless of whether the patient had an abortion or a miscarriage. His war on choice and women’s health hardly stops there, and the list goes on.
If nothing else, Pence’s presence at the rally goes to show that we, as voters and as Americans, cannot just call for the impeachment of Donald Trump. The issues that made for the rise of such a populist demagogue still run rampant throughout our government and our society, and have been present for quite some time now. The removal of Trump from the Oval Office (as far off a dream as it may seem today, on his seventh day in office) should really only be a beginning, a precursor to dealing with the utter mess now flooding the White House.
Mike Pence stands as one of those messes, though criticism for his actions and his stance on policies often runs under the turbulent surface of Donald Trump’s attention-grabbing antics.
Please don’t forget that there’s a lot of work to be done, and there’s a lot of people within the White House and the federal government in general who need to be held responsible for the issues they perpetuate and exacerbate.
