Disney and Pixar’s next original animated feature, Coco, is based on the Mexican Day of the Dead and features an entirely Latinx voice cast. Based on this first teaser, it’s also got some really incredible visuals, which we’ve come to expect from Pixar—as well as what appears to be the setup for a predictably emotional story.
It’s also been described as a “love letter to Mexico,” which makes it all the more relevant this year, and with some of the strongest critics of Disney’s initial moves on the film being brought on to consult, we’re excited to see how things turned out when it releases on November 22, 2017.
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
