It may seem like everything is actively on fire right now, and that’s probably because—you’re not imagining it—politics really are becoming more polarized, with issues largely lining up along party lines. There are still some things the two sides can agree on, though, and that’s how Georgia lawmakers wound up finally doing something about their rape kit backlog.
I’ll understand if you don’t find it exactly encouraging that it takes “we should probably do something in the way of investigation and prosecution of all this rape evidence we have” to find something Republicans and Democrats agree on, especially since we’re just talking about Georgia when this problem exists across the country, but it’s a lot better than some of the other ways people have been finding common ground.
It’s also a reminder that the president isn’t the only person who matters in politics. We’ve got a lot of local, state, and federal elected officials who make important decisions that affect us, which is why it’s so important that we pay just as much attention to them as we do to those at the top. If you’d like to see things like this getting done quickly and more often, vote.
