The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s much-anticipated film The Shape of Water debuted in theaters over the weekend, but now it’s finally online for all to see.
A fairy tale mixed with a love story mixed with a monstrous captivity plot, it looks like the director will take viewers into another fantastical world. From that first shot of home underwater, I was absolutely sold on getting my heart ripped out by Sally Hawkins and a fish man.
The synopsis reads:
“From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation.
Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.”
The experiment, as we see, is the fish man played by Doug Jones who starts forming a connection with Hawkins. Many have also noted a similarity to del Toro’s Abe Sapien from Hellboy, and in a previous description Jones refers to the creature as “the last of my species so I’m like a natural anomaly.” Whether this is intentional or just a fun observation, the story revolves around the “the princess without a voice” and a star-crossed love story that will no doubt bring us to tears.
The Shape of Water comes out December 8th, what do you think of the trailer?
