Disney has dropped the second trailer for Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and it is beautiful. They’ve knocked it out of the park with these character and world designs; I cannot wait to see more of everything in this trailer. I mean, just look at some of these shots.
It’s also glorious to see DuVernay’s eye at work in such a fantastic setting. Her previous films, such as Selma and the documentary 13th, were very much in our real world, so it’s a surprise and a delight to see her confident, elegant style transferred to the otherworldly vision of A Wrinkle in Time.
But perhaps most importantly, this trailer shows a powerful story of black girl heroism in a multiverse where diversity is simply a part of reality. Speaking about the casting in a recent interview, DuVernay said, “We took liberties to be true to the spirit, but we freed ourselves and freed our imagination to bring these fairytales and fantasies into the current time, which is one that should be much more inclusive.”
It can be incredibly frustrating when the genres of imagination, science fiction, and fantasy, revert to tired old racist and sexist depictions of humanity, and so I’m incredibly excited that A Wrinkle in Time now only shows a strange, fantastic world that could be, but also reflects our own world as it really is –
A Wrinkle in Time arrives in theaters on March 9, 2018.
