The real Donald Trump was certainly haunted over the weekend by the most recent developments in the investigation into Russia’s influence in the 2016 election, including Michael “Lock Her Up” Flynn’s guilty plea and his own self-incriminating tweet on the subject. On Saturday Night Live, he was haunted a bit more literally in A Christmas Carol fashion, which is all too fitting as he continues his quest to shift money from the poor to the rich through the tax code like a bizarro-universe Robin Hood.
Sadly, there are no Scrooge-like epiphanies to be found yet (or probably ever), but we can at least take some measure of joy in the very real legal troubles of the same people who had such grave concern about the legality of Hillary Clinton’s emails. That “we” includes Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton, who’s back to both have the last laugh as the Ghost of Christmas Future, and to haunt us as the ghost of alternate timelines—or to validate Republican fears that she’s hanging around as a “shadow president,” I suppose, whatever that means.
Alec Baldwin’s Trump also gets visits from from Billy Bush, who took some time out recently to make sure no one buys Trump’s attempt to lie the Access Hollywood tape—where he bragged about sexual assault—out of existence, Michael Flynn, and of course, Vladimir Putin himself. It’s the perfect way to usher in the holiday season and the end of the year—surpassed only by its vision of the future coming true in the real world, of course. I just hope we don’t actually have to wait for future Christmases for it to happen.
