We are all still mourning the loss of the last male white northern rhino that died last week. It was a harsh reminder of the way humans have impacted the environment in ways that can cause long-term, irreplaceable damage. Which is why we should do everything we can to protect and save endangered animals, like the Asian Elephant.
Since the mid-1980s, the Asian elephant has been listed as endangered with its population declining by at least 50 percent over the last three generations. The major reasons for this are a loss of habitat, habitat degradation, fragmentation, and poaching.
Which is why groups like Elephant Family work to raise awareness about the loss of these majestic creatures. Earlier this month as a way to raise awareness and money, India’s top creatives created a series of 101 elephant statutes. Beautifully colored, the statues have been placed all over places like London and India to make people more conscious about the plight of these gentle giants.
The group has already used donations in the past to get DNA testing for the Elephants and to also fight plans that would further infringe upon the Asian Elephant’s shrinking habitat. It’s proof that we as humans can make a difference in protecting these creatures now more than ever.
