It’s the event that officially kicks off the Christmas season: the annual, much anticipated and always-televised lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
Thousands are expected to crowd the streets of midtown Manhattan to watch the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Plaza, an event that kicks off at 8 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
According to Rockefeller Plaza website, the tree “will remain lit and on display on the plaza between West 48th and 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues until 9pm on January 7.”
Millions more will tune in to watch the lighting on primetime television and on streaming services: the tree lighting will be available to watch online via streaming service FuboTV.
FuboTV offers live streaming of more than 100 networks, from news to sports. The tree lighting will be airing on NBC. Watch here.
Curbed has more info on this year’s tree, which is reportedly a 72-foot monolith:
This year’s tree is, as in many other years, an enormous Norway spruce, this time coming from Wallkill, New York, a small hamlet near the Catskills. As for its stats: It’s 72 feet tall, it weighs approximately 12 tons, and it’s about 75 years old—or it was, before it sacrificed itself for a month’s worth of holiday whimsy.
Watching the tree light up is a longstanding tradition and we won’t be sleeping on it this year. We all deserve some holiday cheer.
