Republicans Own the Libs by Making Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Look … Fun and Relatable

AOC always on beat.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most well-known and outspoken new members of Congress. From her initial run to her victory to now, everyone has become obsessed with her, and for Republicans, this has taken an almost slasher movie-like vibe.

They comment on everything she says and does, even if it has nothing to do with policy, and it has pretty much all backfired because it just makes them look very out of touch—from commenting on the cost of her coat, saying she didn’t look like someone who struggled (which turned into an excellent meme), to now sharing footage of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing in a video from college in an attempt to mock her.

According to CNN, the 30-second clip is part of a 4-minute, 20-second video posted on YouTube eight years ago, filmed at Boston University, despite the erroneous mention of high school:

“‘Here is America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is,’ read the tweet from AnonymousQ1776, who described it as a video from her high school days.”

Ocasio-Cortez, who is an alumnus of the university with a degree in economics and international relations, was part of a group of student dancers imitating scenes from popular 1980s films.

Wow, so … cool? So … relatable?

Oh, I’m sorry, would you prefer for her to be trophy hunting? Getting blackout drunk and assaulting people? Lifting weights with Tobin? Wearing a smock for all time? Instead of having a life, having friends, and being adorable and relatable? You got us!

While it is funny that all they did was make her our eternal Woman Crush Wednesday get you a girl who can do both meme, we have to ask (loosely) as Mariah Carey once did: Why you so obsessed with her?

It’s very creepy and uncomfortable, because AOC is not the only progressive member of Congress. Several of the new congresswomen are the first African-American women to be elected by their states or the first-ever Native American women to the House. Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, is the first Palestinian-American to be elected.

But they are afraid of Ocasio-Cortez because she’s a member of the *grabs biggest microphone* Democratic Socialists of America, and they want to discredit her because they fear all the evil socialist things she wants to accomplish like single-payer health care, free school, and ending private prisons, so they are doing it by shaming her about wealth disparity and doing poor people things like dancing, instead of doing as the elites do and pounding beers.

In all seriousness, it’s not just embarrassing; it’s disrespectful to AOC as someone who went into politics for a reason. If they want to discredit her, they should use policy issues, not her coat or the fact that she has allowed joy into her life.

Plus, the tactics are not working:

Maybe instead of worrying about AOC, they should worry about the rapists, Nazis, and racists, because—spoiler alert!—at the end of Footloose, the town gets dancing back.
