Don’t Expect Avengers: Endgame Trailers to Give Too Much Away

This is ... not shocking

With the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame, we learned one important thing: Scott Lang is maybe the bravest Avenger of them all. A man we believed to have been trapped in the Quantum Realm, Lang ended up on the doorstep of the Avengers compound without a scratch on him. And that’s about the only real plot information we got out of the trailer.

Sure it looks like Tony Stark may be lost in space and running out of air, but—c’mon. That’ll probably be fixed two minutes after the heartwrenching scene where he leaves a “final” message for Pepper Potts.

Marvel and, subsequently, Disney are very good at giving us the information we need to be interested in whatever movie they are trying to sell us and then nothing else. So it isn’t exactly surprising that the trailer for Endgame featured set up for Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and the other surviving Avengers and then nothing else, really.

According to Comic Book Resource, Kevin Feige was asked on the red carpet for the Golden Globes if it was true that the trailers for Avengers: Endgame wouldn’t give us any information past the first 20 minutes of the movie. Which, yes, of course that is the case. Quoth Feige:

Asked whether rumors the trailers may not show beyond the first 15 to 20 minutes of the film, Feige replied, “I’d call it somewhat accurate, yeah. I think, as was the case with a lot of our films, this one in particular, you know being able to generate excitement without giving away any of the many, many, many, many secrets would be ideal. And I think the Disney marketing team is the best in the world and we’ll be able to pull it off.”

When you stop and think about it, even Avengers: Infinity War didn’t give us that much away and, in fact, it lied to us. Remember when Hulk was in the trailer as … well … the Hulk in Wakanda? Now we know that was just Marvel’s way of tricking us into thinking we knew what was going on. Who’s to say the appearance of Scott Lang isn’t the same thing?

We never really know what we’re getting out of an MCU movie until we actually watch the movie itself. To be honest, I couldn’t have told you half of what happened in Infinity War prior to seeing the movie. I never would have figured it out without a lot of spoilers, and spoilers were hard to come by (except Mark Ruffalo revealing that everybody died). So, does Marvel really have that much to worry about with Endgame, or have they been this great at keeping secrets all along?

No matter how hard Mark Ruffalo attempts to spoil the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, we still manage to be surprised with each new movie release. It isn’t surprising that we’re not going to get that much information from Avengers: Endgame in its promotional marketing and that’s as it should be.

Spoiling the movie just to be the one to figure it out before ever watching it isn’t something we should aspire to do. Especially with a build-up like we’ve had to the last ten years for Avengers: Endgame. Let’s just appreciate it and pray that Carol Danvers and Scott Lang hang out together all the time.

Marvel, all you need to worry about with your promotions is to give us enough meme-making content in your trailers to have us talking about it on Twitter for weeks to come. We’ll take care of the rest. (Also, please bring Peter Parker and Bucky Barnes back to life. I need it.)
