As a casual gamer and someone who loves fighting games, I’m so excited about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 game. I know a lot of people had mixed feelings about MKX because of the Kombat Kids and the storyline, but at least from the trailers and all the promo so far, it looks like a lot of bloody fun. NetherRealm Studios revealed new details on Mortal Kombat 11 during a live event in Los Angeles Thursday and it gave us a lot of great peeks at the upcoming game.

We get the prologue sequence, which shows Raiden torturing Shinnok and beheading him. Raiden doesn’t have the power to kill an Elder God, but Shinnok does bleed and can survive being beheaded. Note, kids: immortality without invulnerability is bullshit. Raiden leaves, with Shinnok’s severed head serving as an emblem of his wrath (gangster). A new character, Kronika, appears saying that this was not Shinnok’s destiny, “once more the Thunder God has upset the balance of history.” However, she intends to ensure that universe bends to her will.

The sequence is very beautifully done and the graphics look really solid. I felt like X didn’t really look that great for a game made in 2011, but what a difference eight years makes. It seems really crisp while staying loyal to the design and feel of Mortal Kombat.

According to Polygon, series co-creator Ed Boon said, “that the story will involve characters from one Mortal Kombat timeline meeting (and occasionally beating the organs out of) younger versions of themselves.” Also shared were some new characters and gameplay. “There’s also a “Kosmetic” component, which includes options like character skin, cinematic intros, victory screens, and even fatalities. Players have the option of naming their character customization loadouts.” It seems they haven’t learned anything from Soul Calibur, but follow your bliss.

New gameplay techniques were introduced, including “fatal blows,” available for players to use when their player character health drops too low, and “crushing blows,” which can be activated when certain character-specific requirements are met. Also new is a “perfect block” mechanic, which allows for a comeback window after blocking an attack with precise timing.

My favorite thing is that we got that gives us these high-quality new fatalities and woo chile, it looks cool. Sonya Blade, Scorpion, and the female blood bender character Skarlet have my favorites.

Something I appreciated from X was that while there were sexy costumes for characters like Tanya, they also gave more practical looks to characters like Sonya Blade, whose costume from MK9 haunts me to this day.

The game will have a 25-character-roster, including favorites like Raiden, Baraka, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Skarlet, with newcomers Kronika and Geras. The latter of has powers that allow him to control the flow of time and produce sand-based attacks, which we got to see in the below trailer for him.

Where is Sindel!?

Although Geras does look cool like the black Gaara, he could be the four sand sibling from Naruto.

All in all, the game looks like a solid improvement from X and that’s all I could ask for. Plus my new favorite Cassie Cage is returning so I’m happy about that (but have Jacqui too please.)

More details on Mortal Kombat 11 are expected on Jan. 30, during NetherRealm’s next Kombat Kast livestream. The game has a worldwide release date on April 23, 2019 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

What do you guys think and who are you looking forward to playing as? Mileena forever.
