It seems as if even Pepper Potts isn’t safe from Thanos’s snap—or better yet, safe from contracts. While she will still have Goop and her new television show with Netflix, Gwyneth Paltrow will no longer be on our screens in the MCU.
Paltrow, who has brought Pepper Potts to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last ten years, is retiring from the franchise. So what does that mean for her character arc and the future of the MCU? Well, first of all, it confirms that Tony Stark is either retiring (lol come on, he couldn’t even live without the arc reactor) or that he’s going to die.
We have talked about Tony Stark dying for quite some time. From hints that he is dead in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer to a fanart Twitter image that the Russo brothers shared, everything points to the father of the MCU meeting his ultimate fate in Avengers: Endgame. It started with Tony Stark and Iron Man, but it won’t end there; the legacy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will live on even if Tony Stark dies.
Sure, there’s still a possibility that he will live. Maybe Pepper Potts reveals she’s pregnant with Morgan Stark, the dream that Tony Stark had in Avengers: Infinity War, but more than likely, he’ll die, and it will be sad, but all good things must come to an end—especially a super-rich mortal who just has a fun suit to keep him alive.
Pepper Potts, however, doesn’t have to die just because Tony Stark is probably going to perish while saving the world. She can live on, go somewhere with their child, and remember when Tony was alive and well and doing ridiculous things because come on, he’s Tony Stark. He puts himself in danger of being killed at least 3 times a day.
I love Pepper Potts; we share the same weird allergy to strawberries, and I’d also love to rock white suits if I could, so seeing her leave the MCU isn’t going to be easy. But with each end comes a new beginning, so who knows who we will see take over the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future? We just know it won’t be Pepper Potts.
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters this April 26th, but we’ll all probably combust from theories before we make it there. Every single day there’s a new Endgame theory out there on the internet, and every day, the Russo brothers sit up in their tower and laugh at us mere mortals who just want to know what’s going to happen to our favorite characters.
I guess I’ll just have to sit in my misery until April, and even then, I’ll probably cry a lot, because no one wants to see Tony Stark die.
