Netflix is dropping Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé on April 17th, and the official trailer just sent shivers down my spine.

On April 7th, Netflix teased the surprise documentary with a tweet that featured the word “Homecoming” and “A Film by Beyoncé,” sending fans into wild, delighted speculation. Now the official trailer is available, and it looks incredible. Even if you don’t consider yourself a Beyoncé fan (though I believe we are all, by default, Beyoncé fans), this film, which Netflix is billing as an “intimate, in-depth look at Beyoncé’s celebrated 2018 Coachella performance,”  is going to be all the Internet will be talking about for a long time after. And rightly so.

The trailer, cut with footage from the Coachella performance and previously unseen behind-the-scenes preparation for it, is overlaid with a statement from the legendary Dr. Maya Angelou, who passed away in 2014. “What I really want to do is be a representative of my race, of the human race,” we hear Angelou saying. “I have a chance to show how kind we can be, how intelligent and generous we can be. I have a chance to teach and love and to laugh, and I know that when I’m finished doing what I’m sent here to do, I will be called home.”

Vibe quotes Beyoncé explaining the importance of the Coachella performance in pop culture history: “It was a celebration of all the people who sacrificed more than we could ever imagine, who moved the world forward so that it could welcome a woman of color to headline such a festival.” Netflix says that Homecoming “reveals the emotional road from creative concept to cultural movement.”

This is Beyoncé’s world and the rest of us are just living in it, but at least Homecoming will give us a front-row seat.
