**Spoilers for Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame are coming ahead.**
**So many spoilers.**
**I’m not kidding; we’re talking about the end of the movie here.**
**Proceed with caution.**
It has come to my attention that not everyone else loves random characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so when a surprise character showed up at the end of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, many people seemed to be confused. I could hear a sea of “who is that?” as the camera panned around a group of characters at a certain funeral procession.
And then my Iron Man 3-loving self stood on up and to declare that the little boy from that film was back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You might not have recognized him because he’s grown up quite a bit, but that young man was once Tony’s kid helper in Iron Man 3. Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins) was a character that gave us the Tony Stark-and-a-kid feels before anyone else, and though he’s had competition in that arena since, it’s only fitting that he would come to support Tony Stark one more time.
Here’s the thing about the end of Avengers: Endgame: We sobbed because Tony Stark gave up his life to save his family. Whether that means both the Avengers and his family he made with Pepper is up to you, but he did it for those he cared about most, so his funeral felt like a punch to the gut.
I’ll openly admit that I was annoyed with Tony Stark after Captain America: Civil War, but Tony is the character that started my love of the MCU. He’s the character I’ve followed, and just because I was Team Cap doesn’t mean that I hate Tony Stark. So, watching him die brought me absolutely no joy, and it didn’t help that the camera panned past Wanda, Bucky, and Sam to reveal Harley Keener behind them.
Harley was just a kid when he went on a mission with Tony, and that little boy clearly cared for the hero. He and Tony developed a close bond and supported each other throughout Iron Man 3. So, to see him older now and “reunited” with Tony in the worst possible fashion—and watching as those closest to him mourned him—hurt more than I can express in words. We all knew that this movie was going to be hard, but there’s something so outrageously depressing about the end of Avengers: Endgame, and I don’t know that I’ll ever get over it.

If you’re searching for who else was present in the funeral scene, that would be:
– Pepper Potts with Pepper and Tony’s daughter Morgan, and Tony’s longtime driver and friend Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau)
– all of the remaining Avengers and Guardians (minus Gamora)
– Black Panther‘s T’Challa, Shuri, and Okoye
– Ant-Man and The Wasp‘s Scott Lang with Hope Van Dyne and her parents Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglass)
– Spider-Man‘s Peter Parker and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei)
– Captain Marvel
– Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier) and Sam Wilson (Falcon)
– Harley Keener
– General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and, of course, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) with the eyepatch we now know he earned courtesy of Goose the Cat.
