Demi Lovato has just revealed that they are non-binary, and will be using they/them pronouns, and we’re proud. Speaking your truth isn’t always easy, and I’d imagine that being a celebrity makes things 10 times as hard, especially for someone as well known as Lovato. Everyone’s watching what you do, waiting for you to fall, and waiting for that next juicy story to sell and make a payday.
Lovato took a moment to share with fans and friends the changes in their life via a video posted on their Twitter account. The video is shown below:
Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between. pic.twitter.com/HSBcfmNruo

For those that can’t listen to Lovato’s truth right now, let’s break down what they said.
“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” Lovato explained after coming out with their non-binary news and how they’re embracing this revelation.
Lovato also added that they came to this decision “after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.” The singer has always been open about their personal struggles with mental health. And just recently, we learned about the real details and intricacies of their 2018 near-fatal overdose and how that changed their life forever.
“I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” Lovato said, being raw and honest about how new this is for them and how they will be learning about this change in their life right along with us.
This distinction, this openness, makes it easy to connect with Lovato as they share their experience with us. In turn, their truth and journey are bound to inspire their fans. And it’s something that Lovato wants to do as they find their way in this new world for them.
Also, remember what Lovato said in their tweet thread in their coming out: “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.” Even Lovato is facing some invalidating reactions in the media and online, and it’s important that we speak up against them until all the trans and non-binary people out there feel safe living their truth.
Regarding Demi Lovato, a quick note for the skeptics: trans and non-binary people have always been around, and the reason you’re seeing an increase in our visibility is because it’s increasingly accepted to be who we really are. Instead of being cynical, you should honor that.

I got nothing but love for Demi Lovato and I’m super proud of them for coming out as non-binary. I look forward to whatever projects they have in store. To anyone else who is non-binary: don’t let anyone stop you from being you! There are people who love you! I love you! ❤️

Demi Lovato’s pronouns aren’t a joke and if you think they are, enjoy your block.
I’m not doing this in 2021.

This seems like a great day to remind everyone that the use of “they” as a singular gender-neutral pronoun dates back to Chaucer in the 1380s. It’s always been a part of modern English. Shakespeare did it, too.#DemiLovato #grammar #LGTBQ

Coming outs like this mean so much for me as a young non-binary person. The more people are coming out of closet the more we’re starting to talk that non-binary people exist and deserve to be accepted just like everyone else. #DemiLovato pic.twitter.com/f8rNEAdYSd

u dont have to like demi lovato to not misgender them. regardless of what u think of someone, showing respect to their identity and pronouns should not be something they need to earn from u. its expected. only being respectful and supportive when its someone u like is weird.
