Taika Waititi Had a Great Response to That Infamous Kiss With Tessa Thompson and Rita Ora

"I was doing nothing wrong. It's fine."

It was the kiss that broke the internet, meaning that we all instantly got jealous and wanted to live our best post-vaxx life like Rita Ora, Tessa Thompson, and Taika Waititi. All of us were sitting in our homes, waiting to go out into the world and interact with one another again, and then there were Rita Ora, Tessa Thompson, and Taika Waititi living the life we all longed to have.

We’re talking about their kissing session that apparently ruffled the feathers of the Marvel bosses while also making the entire internet wish they were on that balcony, too. Remember? It was just an entire day of everyone screaming. But now, Waititi is opening up about the kiss heard round the Twittersphere and how we all reacted to it.

Talking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Waititi was asked if he was upset by all the commotion around the pictures online. His response? “I think in the world of the internet, everything goes away pretty quick. And also, ‘Is it that big a deal?’ No, not really. I was doing nothing wrong. It’s fine.”

Honestly, iconic. Especially because he’s right. The internet moves at an incredibly fast pace. Since their shared kiss in May, we’ve had at least 25 huge new stories taking over that also burned down the internet. And I said at least. But more than that, he didn’t do anything wrong, he just lived his life in the same way we’d all like to in the post-vaxx world.

Waititi’s comments are also a standard that I think many celebrities should live by. Did you do anything wrong? No? Then let the internet do its thing and that’s that. We live in a world where everyone is afraid of consequences that I think if they see themselves trending, they jump to defend their actions whether they should or not. So Taika Waititi pointing out that his now-infamous kiss with Rita Ora and Tessa Thompson wasn’t a big deal is a great lesson for celebrities and the internet.

At the end of the day, we were all probably jealous. After staying inside for over a year, seeing some of our faves all kissing each other? Who wouldn’t want to be there? But I really do love Waititi’s response. So often, we want to make a big deal out of celebrities and their relationships or what they are doing and our focus is there instead of on other things. We’re too focused on who is kissing who and not on what’s important and happening in Hollywood.

But now we have this wonderful quote from Taika Waititi to remind us that it really isn’t that big of a deal. “I was doing nothing wrong. It’s fine,” shall live in my mind rent-free for a while.
