Comics books have been a welcome home for LGBTQ+ fans for a while now. Back in 1988, DC had their first openly gay character, ExtraƱo. A few years later, in 1992, Marvel published an emotional issue of Alpha Flight. In the comic, Northstar revealed he was gay. Later, Northstar would have the first gay wedding in Marvel history. But although they had LGBTQ+ characters, it wasn’t until the past few years that the major comic publishers fully embraced their pride. Recently, both publishers announced all the titles commemorating Pride 2022.
Both Marvel and DC will put out a new Pride anthology. Each issue will be around 100 pages of new content. DC Pride 2022 lists at least seven new mini-stories featuring Aquaman/Jackson Hyde, Superman, Tim Drake, and everyone’s favorite chaotic coupleāPoison Ivy and Harley Quinn.
Following the same theme, Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 will also have about seven different mini-stories. The Young Avengers team reunites in this special issue. Other stories feature Moondragon, Somnus (introduced in last year’s Pride issue), and Hercules.
Officially, LGBTQ+ Pride month is June, so many of the comics don’t release until then. However, some titles are kicking off new series starring LGBTQ+ characters. And Marvel will release eight Pride variant covers of current titles featuring some of the more famous LGBTQ+ characters as well. Here is a complete list of DC and Marvel’s Pride-related releases.
