Fear Street: Part One hit Netflix on July 2nd, hence, bringing to life one of R. L. Stine’s popular horror series. Sometimes referred to as the “Stephen King of children’s literature,” Stine is the author of hundreds of horror novels directed toward younger audiences. Aside from Fear Street, he also penned Goosebumps, Mostly Ghostly, and The Nightmare Room series. While Goosebumps and Mostly Ghostly have received film adaptions, Fear Street was his most recent work to be adapted.
While the original books were written for young adults, the Fear Street series on Netflix is certainly not for kids. The brutal and gory slasher films follow a group of teens who set out to put an end to a series of brutal murders that have plagued the town of Shadyside for centuries. The film series occurs in three parts, with each set in a different period. In this manner, Fear Street covers Shadyside’s dark history from the 1600s, to present day. By finding what happened in the past, the teens of the present can finally solve the murders and save their friends and town.
The films were positively received, with many enjoying the retro feel, as The Fear Street series certainly pays homage to the horror slasher films of the 90s. Meanwhile, it also boasted strong performances from its cast, particularly in Fear Street: Part Two from Sadie Sink, Emily Rudd, and Ryan Simpkins. The films also deliver a few good scares and thrills, keeping viewers on their toes, while constructing an intriguing mystery across centuries.
But will there be a Fear Street 4?
Fear Street‘s success has, naturally, caused fans to wonder if the series will go beyond the trilogy. As of now, Netflix has not officially confirmed a fourth Fear Street film. However, there have been a couple of hints that there may be a fourth film. Here’s what we know (warning, *spoilers ahead* if you haven’t watched the first three parts).
The first hint the end might not be the end was the post-credit scene of Fear Street: Part Three. The film saw the breaking of the curse and the death of the perpetrator of the murders. However, the very last scene, post-credits, shows an unknown person stealing the satanic book tied to the murders. This strongly hints that the Fear Street story is not over.
Furthermore, Leigh Janiak, the director of the Fear Street trilogy, has been vocal about her desire to produce more Fear Street films. Not only does Janiak want another film, but she wants to build a full fledged franchise out of Fear Street. The director was inspired by Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and wants to create something similar with Fear Street. Hence, Janiak is open to producing another film and seems to have plenty of ambitious plans for which direction to take next.
Meanwhile, Janiak is correct that Fear Street certainly could become a big film franchise. Just look at the source material. Stine has produced dozens of novels in the Fear Street universe. Hence, there isn’t any lack of material or ideas for further sequels, stand-alone films, series, or even TV shows.
Fear Street performed very well, its director is open to expanding the franchise, and the book series it is based on is expansive. Thus, even though Netflix hasn’t confirmed Fear Street 4 yet, my fingers are crossed that they may still do so in the future.
