Susan Sarandon is joining the DC universe. The Oscar-winning actress has signed on to play the villainous Victoria Kord in the upcoming Blue Beetle movie. The film will star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Jaime Reyes, working-class teen who discovers a mystical scarab of alien origin. The scarab bonds with Reyes and provides him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor (think Iron Man meets Venom…but DC). Blue Beetle will be the first superhero movie centered on a Latino superhero. The film will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala).
Sharon Stone was previously in talks to take on the role before Sarandon signed on. This will be Sarandon’s first entry into superhero films, though she did voice Black Widow in Marvel’s podcast series Marvel’s Wastelanders.
But who is Victoria Kord? All we know is that Kord was a character invented for the film, but the Kord family has a long history in the comics. Ted Kord was the second Blue Beetle, who inherited KORD Industries from his father Thomas Kord. Kord Industries, much like its competitors Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp Industries, is a multi-billion dollar research and development corporation that specializes in defense (it’s also where inventor Ted designed and manufactured his various weapons and accoutrement).
Sarandon joins previously announced cast members George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Belissa Escobedo, Bruna Marquezine and Harvey Guillén. While most roles have been kept under wraps, it was announced that Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.) will play Carapax the Indestructible Man.
Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023.
