Last week it was confirmed that Sabrina the Teenage Witch would return to television, in the form of a new cartoon on The Hub, written by a Buffy writing alumni, in which Sabrina is still a witch… but also spends a healthy amount of time fighting bad guys and hiding her magical powers from the normal world. Blatant cross-pollination stemming form the rise of the superhero in mainstream media? Sure, but dang if I’m not into it.
Archie Comics, the conceptual home of the character, is understandably excited, and well they should be! Sabrina turns fifty this month! (Although you wouldn’t know it to look at her.) In honor of the occasion, they’re putting out a huge digital exclusive comic covering her entire history, and we’ve got Sabrina’s first appearance right here to show from it.
It’s been a long way from 1962 to Melissa Joan Hart. Here’s what Archie has to say about the edition:
SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH: 50 MAGICAL STORIES
Since her creation in 1962, Sabrina the Teenage Witch has become one of the most popular and endearing characters in American pop culture. To celebrate her 50-year anniversary, Archie Comics presents 50 of Sabrina’s most spellbinding stories! This Digital Exclusive collects OVER 350 PAGES of content spanning Sabrina’s history, including a NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN origin story, written by Sabrina creator George Gladir himself. So join Sabrina, Salem, Aunties Hilda and Zelda, and many more for the most magical book of the year!
The anniversary issue goes on sale October 10th and although the original ticket price for the issue was $9.99, Archie is dropping it to $4.99 through October 31st! So that’s a 50th Anniversary, with 50 Stories, $5! You can check out our exclusive preview pages in the gallery below, but first, the official logo for the new cartoon:
