After finding themselves beaten to the punch by the Expendables-inspired action flick starring Gina Carano and Katee Sackhoff, Millennium Films, the studio behind the original Expendables, has announced their own official spinoff about a team of female mercenaries… called The ExpendaBelles.
Seriously. I could not make that up if I tried.
The film is being penned by Legally Blonde writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, and while the pair’s comedy roots coupled with the title (oh God, that title) would seem to indicate we’re looking at a Scary Movie-esque satire where the team will have to sneak into an enemy base using elaborate disguises created with only everyday makeup à la Zoolander, the basic description makes it sound like Millennium is playing it straight. According to Deadline, The ExpendaBelles will be a “spinoff action film that will show the feminine side of the mercenary business” and will hopefully (hopefully for Millennium, anyway) kickstart its own franchise.
Honestly, I don’t know what to think about this. On the one hand, can you ever really have too many films about ladies kicking butt? On the other hand, the “feminine side” of the mercenary business? I don’t like the sound of that. And the title’s not making me hopeful. It conjures up images of Belle from Beauty and the Beast wielding an AK-47. (I’d totally see that, by the way.) But titles change all the time. Get a better title and a good cast, and this could turn out well. It’s too early to say.
But can the Carano-starring female The Expendables call dibs on Sigourney Weaver? Please?
