One of my biggest disappointment with the X-Men movie franchise so far has been the lack of Sentinels, the mutant-hunting robots from the Marvel Universe. Sure, we got a quick shot of a Sentinel in X-Men: The Last Stand’s danger room sequence but it was merely a taste. Now there’s talk of the giants playing a big part in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Is it too good to be true? See for yourself.
Newly appointed Fox Creative Consultant and comic creator, Mark Millar, did an interview with SFX Magazine in which he discussed Matthew Vaughn’s take on the next X-Men film. He said the director is going for a big sci-fi story this time around. Which makes sense considering the Days of Future Past storyline in the comics involves time travel.
“[It’s] X-Men meets The Terminator. You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes – it’s got everything in one film,” said Millar. They wouldn’t put robots in the movies and not have them be Sentinels, right? And yes, Millar also confirmed we would be seeing an apocalyptic future.
“Cost-wise it’s going to go up, and ambitious-wise it’s gone up. But Vaughn can handle it. Vaughn made Kick-Ass for $28 million,” he said. The last we heard of this project was Sir Patrick Stewart revealing he’d be returning as Professor Xavier.
In a separate piece, Millar shared his hopes of keep all the Marvel properties, regardless of who holds the rights, in the same universe.
“Fox have said that they want to build a cohesive universe and I’d personally like this to work in complement to the Marvel one,” he said. “It would be cool if these universes didn’t contradict each other so if you went to see Spidey, The Avengers, The X-Men, etc, as a viewer you would have no idea that all three are coming from different studios. I’d love to make it look like they’re all just happening in one place.”
That actually sounds like a really good idea. X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters July 18, 2014.
