The speculation that the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman will be exclusively about the Huntsman has been laid to rest–Kristen Stewart has confirmed that she will be back for the sequel, though original director Rupert Sanders will not.
In an interview with Indiewire, Stewart said of the sequel:
“Oh, it’s gonna be f**ckin’ amazing. No, I’m so excited about it, it’s crazy… I’m not allowed [to to talk about it.] The other day I said that there was a strong possibility that we’re going to make a sequel, and that’s very true, but everyone was like ‘Whoa, stop talking about it.’ So no, I’m totally not allowed to talk about it.”
Stewart didn’t specify how big a character Snow White will be in the sequel (probably because, as she mentioned, she’s not allowed to), so it still could be Huntsman-centric, but I’m going to go ahead and guess that if Stewart gets a bajillion-dollar paycheck for each movie they’re not going to relegate her to a supporting role. We also don’t know who’ll be replacing Sanders as the director.
Now before you say “I don’t care about this news, Snow White and the Huntsman sucked, Kristen Stewart can’t act.”—those points may be valid. I don’t know. I didn’t see Snow White, and the only thing I’ve seen Stewart in is Adventureland, which I thought she did well in. But even if the movie is Ishtar-level awful, it was one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and it had a female lead. The fact that she’s not being pushed out (whether because of her affair with Sanders or, as would probably be more likely, because she costs a heck of a lot of money to hire) to make way for yet another male-starring action movie is relevant, and it is good.
There are already plenty of bad action movies starring guys. Let’s save some for the ladies, too.
