If there’s one thing that’s pretty clear about New Zealand, it’s that the people in charge of things that are generally treated like pretty serious business by society, for example, airlines and the national mint, have absolutely no qualms about waving their geek flags high. I guess when your country becomes the world’s idea of where Middle Earth is, embracing it is the easiest option. But we’re not here to talk about folks with fuzzy feet or faces. The New Zealand mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who by issuing a commemorative coin.
But, like a lot of things, the best part of this is the box that it comes in.
It won’t be the first time New Zealand has make itself some geeky coins. As you might expect, they made some in honor of the release of The Hobbit, but they’ve also done ones for Star Wars, Transformers, and even Monopoly. Yup. They’ve made Monopoly money that is actual legal tender. One face of The Doctor Who $2 coin is pictured above, while the other side bears the standard image of Queen Elizabeth II. Maybe the country is trying to send more hints to Peter Jackson that he should really investigate working on a Doctor Who episode like he said that one time.
Ah, yes, but the packaging.
According to Stuff.co.nz, each coin will travel in its own replica TARDIS, complete with TARDIS noise each time you open it. I have to say, “Heads or TARDIS?” does have a certain ring to it.
