Today in Doctor Who 50th anniversary news, BBC America and BBC Cymru Wales a co-producing a TV movie about the creation of Doctor Who, starring David Bradley, he of curmudgeonly characters Argus Filch and Game of Thrones‘ Walder Frey, as original First Doctor William Hartnell.
So no, Bradley won’t be taking the reins from Smith as Twelve. That’d be kind of cool, though, to take the show in that radically different a direction. He’d run around tattling on alien species who mess with him along with his trusty companion Mrs. Norris. I’d watch it.
The movie, called An Adventure In Space And Time and being written by Doctor Who/Sherlock scribe Mark Gatiss, will also star Brian Cox as the BBC drama head who created the show, Jessica Raine as producer Verity Lambert, and Sacha Dhawan as Waris Hussein, who directed the first episode, An Unearthly Child.
Said Bradley of the movie, airing later this year:
“I’m absolutely thrilled. I first heard about this role from Mark [Gatiss] while watching the Diamond Jubilee flotilla from the roof of the National Theatre. [A/N: Good God that is a British sentence.] When he asked if I would be interested, I almost bit his hand off!”
Careful, David. You might be channeling Mrs. Norris a bit much there.
