Is There a ‘Twisters’ Streaming Release Date?

We heart Twisters.

We heart Twisters. From its homage to ’90s disaster flicks to its twangy country soundtrack, it’s just the kind of uncomplicated IMAX thrillfest we needed to kick the summer box office into high gear. Now that it’s in theaters, when can we expect Twisters to hit streaming?

Glen Powell playing an obnoxious Facebook livestreamer. Daisy Edgar-Jones’ fake southern accent. Tornadoes. Lots of tornadoes. Look, no matter how world-weary and jaded you are by the current state of Hollywood, you can’t deny that director Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters is an absolute blast. The big-budget disaster rom-com premiered on July 19 and has since gone on to snag the third-biggest opening of 2024, grossing well over $80 million domestically in its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

Twisters is the spiritual successor to 1996’s aptly-titled Twister and follows retired storm chaser Kate (Edgar-Jones). In the story, she returns to her home state of Oklahoma years after a failed experiment to “disrupt the dynamics” of a cyclone left three of her best friends dead. Along the way, she meets the charismatic Tyler (Powell), a cocky, pick-up truck-driving “tornado wrangler” with whom she forms an unlikely alliance with when the opportunity arises for her to finally finish her experiment once and for all.

Again, the Amblin-produced weather flick has seen an impressive box office performance thanks largely to a viral TikTok trend that shows unsuspecting moviegoers before and after experiencing it in 4DX. I’ll let the memes speak for themselves. But even though Twisters is, in my opinion, the kind of blockbuster you want to watch on the biggest screen possible, those looking forward to viewing it at home hopefully won’t have to wait too much longer.

When does Twisters come out on streaming?

As of now, there’s been no word from Universal and Warner Bros. on when we can expect Twisters to debut on streaming—at least as far as an exact date. However, we do know that the film will roll out on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s service, and if past releases are anything to go by, we could see Twisters premiere on VOD by late August or early September, as the studio tends to wait 45 days after a movie hit theaters before releasing it on Peacock. Given Twisters’ commercial success, however, it could be longer.

It’s also important to note that the action-thriller will be available on Peacock for four months before making the jump to Prime Video for ten months, before ultimately returning to Peacock for the remainder of its 18-month window as the result of a truly head-scratching licensing agreement between the two studios. Those darn streaming rights! The important thing, however, is that we’ll be able to witness Glen Powell’s glorious wet t-shirt scene from the comfort of home soon—we’ll just have to wait patiently.
