Season three of Sherlock hasn’t even started filming and already Benedict Cumberbatch is talking about Season four. Slow down, Ben! Give us some time to process.

What am I saying? Even if the actors are signed, they’re both making movies and Steven Moffat has to make the 50th and then a new season of Doctor Who. This isn’t going to happen for years.

Cumberbatch let the news slip to the Radio Times:

We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.

As previously stated, that fourth Sherlock could be years in the making, between the busy schedules of the actors, writers, and producer/directors who put the show together. But Cumberbatch isn’t just ready for a fourth season. He’s open for more. “It just depends on Martin [Freeman] and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.”

I suppose it is nice to know you have a steady gig to come back to whenever you need work. After all, I know what happens to Smaug at the end of The Hobbit, and I there isn’t much of a history of returns for Star Trek villains either. At least Sherlock Holmes gets to cheat death.
