A Possible Return to Doctor Who for Madame de Pompadour? Yes, Please.

We’ve recently heard that Captain Jack Harkness won’t be returning to Doctor Who any time soon. But it’s looking like another character to have locked lips with the Doctor might be: Madame de Pompadour, from the excellent season two episode “The Girl in the Fireplace.”

The source of the rumor is a trio of tweets from Sophia Myles, who played Madame de Pompadour, a.k.a. Reinette:

I keep missing calls from Steven Moffatt. bugger.

Just left a voicemail for Moffatt:”Times’s up. Let me out of the Fireplace, please.”

I have just spoken to Steven Moffatt. We have figured everything out. Not to worry. Relax. Breathe. Let go…

Now, we don’t know for sure whether the two of them have been chatting about Doctor Who—the “let me out of the fireplace” could just be a Moffat-style misdirect. Moffat’s doing Sherlock as well, after all. I wouldn’t mind seeing Myles in that—she’s a great actress. Wouldn’t it be great if Reinette did come back to Who, though? It’s been years since I saw “The Girl in the Fireplace,” and I don’t remember much about it, but one of the few things I do remember is that Madame de Pompadour was awesome in it.

Also: Creepy clockwork robots with French-style wigs. And Rose and Mickey pretty much just ran around the whole time, right? And there was a horse. There was definitely a horse.

I really need to rewatch this episode.
