Captain Kirk and Donnie Darko To Play Singing Princes In Into the Woods?

According to The Hollywood Reporter Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are in discussions to join the Stephen Sondheim musical as Rapunzel and Cinderella’s Princes (though it’s unclear which will be which). “Deal-making hasn’t quite begun,” writes THR, “but the two actors met and even sang for director Rob Marshall for their respective parts and are expected to receive offers to join the star-studded cast.”

Already in that-star studded cast are Meryl Streep as the witch and Johnny Depp, who will apparently play “a hungry and sexy variation of a fairy tale wolf.” A few days ago British actor James Corden (Craig in Doctor Who!) reportedly signed on as the Baker.

If the Pine and Gyllenhaal casting goes through Into the Woods will mark the first singing roles for both of them (ETA: Pine actually sung in 2010’s Small Town Saturday Night, so check that out if you want a window into his vocal chops). Though it won’t be the first time they’ve played Princes, or at least sort-of Princes; Pine played Anne Hathaway‘s love interest in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and Gyllenhaal starred in the Prince of Persia movie. I dare you to do better, Into the Woods.
