Here’s something that will make you feel old: Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1: Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life came out eight years ago. Created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the comic series was a great success, landing the character a feature film. However, O’Malley’s art has remained in the original black and white in the subsequent reprints of the books. That will be changing this August when Oni Press debuts a color edition of the books called the Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover, which is pretty much just what it sounds like.

For the production of the new color edition of the books, Oni Press looked to award-winning colorist Nathan Fairbairn to brighten up O’Malley’s images. In the images released by Oni Press, it looks like Fairbairn, whose work includes Batman Incorporated and Swamp Thing, really does breathe a new life into O’Malley’s black and white work while also seeming completely natural. It also makes those jokes about Ramona’s hair work a bit better.

In addition to being in color (and hardcover!) the new editions will be much larger than the original books — a whopping 6 x 9 inches. These color editions will also feature new cover art by O’Malley, and are planned to be released twice a year. The first is scheduled to drop on August 8th, with the next volume — Scott Pilgrim vs. The World — following in October.

If you’ve never read the comics that spawned the film, then this is a great opportunity. Or if you already own all the original books and just want something new and pretty, there’s no shame in that either.
