Mattel’s Barbie revamp isn’t only working to include more body types, it’s also bringing dolls modeled after inspirational women. We were super thrilled to hear about their Ava DuVernay doll and the Zendaya doll, so it’s exciting to see who’s going to get a doll next.
At the Makers Conference Kim Culmone, Vice President of Barbie Global, unveiled a new Barbie modeled after soccer player Abby Wambach! Barbie has been a soccer player before, but Wambach is Mattel’s first lesbian Barbie, another occasion to celebrate. Culmone said that she knows the doll “will inspire young girls to be as incredible as the woman who has inspired us all.”
Abby Wambach, who says she was a “Barbie kid” her whole life, talked about how excited she was to see herself as a Barbie.
This is a really impactful statement…it just proves that we really are getting somewhere. Not everyone is created equal and if you’re out there, and if maybe your doll doesn’t look exactly like you feel, here’s another option. And, you know, I’m actually going to have to go on a run because she looks a little svelte.
What do you think about the new Barbie? Are you a cool kid who wants one?
