I don’t want to shock you, but it’s been twenty years since the last The Addams Family movie came out. Yes. Twenty years. And now MGM is resurrecting the family from the grave for an animated movie.
Variety reports that MGM is in “final negotiations” with producers Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun to usher the family back to the big screen. Though there’s no director yet, the film does have a writer in Pamela Pettler, whose previous credits include Corpse Bride and 9. She’s no strange to ‘90s nostalgia, either, having co-executive produced and written some episodes of the Clueless TV show that I didn’t care about because there was no Alicia Silverstone. As if!
I’m not exempt from a kneejerk reaction against any and all remakes (even though I wish I were—Hollywood’s tendency away from original stories is troubling, but being a reboot in no way precludes individual movies from being good), but after the initial shudder… I’m actually on board with this one. And I’ll tell you what got me there: Remembering the Beetlejuice cartoon. It was an animated reboot of a similar property, albeit a TV show and not a movie, and it was glorious.
Plus, the movie being animated means that my mental images of the Addams Family can remain Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, et. al., without any lesser Addamses sullying it. The voices will be different, but I can deal.
