Set to glow-punch her way into our homes and streaming devices on June 8, 2022, Ms. Marvel is part of Disney and Marvel’s latest expansion of their cinematic universe. Ms. Marvel will follow Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan as she tries to navigate things like high school, family, crushes, and of course the onset of her superpowers.
So who is in Disney’s Ms. Marvel?
Iman Vellani is Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel
According to Marvel, Khan, who lives in New Jersey with her family, is a typical teenager who is struggling to figure out her future. She is also “a great student, avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe who has a special affinity for superheroes, particularly Captain Marvel.” In the comics, she possessed latent Inhuman lineage that became activated by the Terrigen bomb dropped during the war involving Inhumans and the Kree. When she was exposed to the mist created by the bomb she gained the ability to stretch her body in almost any way imaginable (not unlike Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic). In the trailer released in March, it was revealed that in the show her powers would be more cosmic in nature and related to the magical bangles that she wears. Kamala Khan has been an important step forward for Muslim representation in superhero comics and now in the MCU onscreen. She was created by comics writer G. Willow Wilson and Marvel editor Sana Amanat.
Matt Lintz is Bruno Carrelli and Yasmeen Fletcher is Nakia Bahadir
Lintz will be playing Bruno Carrelli, who is one of Khan’s best friends and companions. Fletcher will be playing Nakia, one of Khan’s other BFFs. In the comics, Nakia wears a hijab, and fans were concerned about whether this representation would be included until the trailer confirmed that she would also be wearing one in the show as well.
Aramis Knight is Kareem/Red Dagger
Knight will be playing Kareem, aka the Red Dagger. Red Dagger is a crime-fighting vigilante who is connected to the Khan family. In the comics, Kareem lived with Kamala’s grandmother in Karachi while he was a university student. He would study during the day and then transform into a masked hero and fight crime by night.
Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur are Muneeba and Yusuf Khan
Shroff will be playing Muneeba Khan, Kamala’s mother, while Bollywood actor Mohan Kapur will be playing her father Yusuf. In the comics, Kamala came into conflict with her parents sometimes over adhering to Muslim values and traditions, but she still remained extremely close to them. Also in the latest storyline in the comics, Kamala returns from saving a distant planet from an invading force to learn that her father has been diagnosed with a rare, incurable illness. However, it’s unlikely that the illness will come into play in her origin series.
Laurel Marsden is Zoe Zimmer
Marsden will be playing Zoe Zimmer. Zimmer is one of the popular girls at Coles Academic High School where Kamala is a student. And while they are often at odds, or are “frenemies,” Zimmer has the distinction of being the first person that Ms. Marvel rescues in the comics—after she falls into the Hudson River. Perhaps she will receive a dunking in the series as well!
Other cast and characters include Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan, Kamala’s older brother, and Travina Springer as Tyesha, his wife. Rish Shah will play Kamran, Kamala’s secret (or not so secret) crush at school. And Laith Nakli will be Sheikh Abdullah, an imam from Jersey City and Kamala’s religious mentor.
