Season Two of the Attack on Titan anime series we’ve all come to love won’t be available until 2016, and the live-action films being released in Japan won’t be available in the Americas until the late fall as President of FUNimation Entertainment, Gen Fukunaga told ComingSoon.net, and yet there are still more ways to enjoy the world of Attack on Titan being released—the most recent of which being a live-action web series, and an animated spin-off set in … junior high?
The live-action web series is called Attack on Titan: Counterattack’s Beacon, and it focuses on the popular character of Hanji, and acts as a companion to the live-action feature films. Airing as three 30-minute episodes on the streaming service, dTV, Counterattack’s Beacon will use five characters from the films, and focus on a Hanji side-plot that got left out of the films that includes Hanji’s research into the Titans as well as the development of the survey corps’ rope-maneuvering gear. The trailer above is in Japanese (and the English from Dutch translated subtitles on YouTube don’t help much), and the series comes to the web via dTV on August 15th.
The second Attack on Titan spin-off is slightly less official—Attack on Titan: Junior High. It’s based on a parody manga written by Saki Nakagawa, and it retells the events of AoT with the same characters in a new setting, which in this case is junior high. Nothing says Metaphor for the Awkward Tween Years like being attacked by Titans, I guess. Check out adorable chibi Eren in the trailer above! Attack on Titan: Junior High will air in October on the Japanese network, MBS.
Between these things, the feature films, and countless tie-in mangas, light novels, and even a Marvel Spider-Man/Titan crossover, it seems like Attack on Titan is everywhere! Everywhere, except for its Season Two being all up in my Crunchyroll queue! Come back, Attack on Titan anime! We miss you!
What Attack on Titan tie-ins or remakes do you like best? What would you recommend to someone (like me, ahem), who’s only ever seen the anime but wants to get to know the AoT universe better? Tell us in the comments below!
